NEXT PlaceMakers Southern Scooter Challenge -
September 2024
Registrations will open June 2024
The Scooter Challenge is an endurance ride, from the sea to mountains in New Zealand’s heartland. From windswept Stirling Point in Bluff to the tourist Mecca and alpine resort of Queenstown. A journey of 220 kilometers to raise funds within The PlaceMakers Foundation, this year we will be keeping it in the South and supporting The Southland Charity Hospital and Hospice Southland.
The Challenge is in no way a race – it’s an awareness-raising and fundraising event for the survivors, families of those with cancer and those committed to making a difference. By raising funds and awareness for The Southland Charity Hospital and Hospice Southland we are helping them continue their great work. 2021 was suppose to be our 7th time running our PlaceMakers Scooter Challenge; but because Covid we made the difficult decision to postponed it till 2022. The Challenge is not for the fainthearted, this is not a relaxing day out, it is designed to be the coldest, longest, hardest, most grueling and uncomfortable test of endurance on a city scooter to raise money and awareness for our chosen charity. The Southland Charity Hospital Trust was established in 2019 following Blair's highly-publicosed battle with terminal bowel cancer. Blair was told he had weeks to live, but chronic under-resourcing of the health service in Southland meant he was unlikely to see a specialist before cancer took his life. Blair and his family decided that this needed to change. Because of their work the formation of the Southland Charity Hospital was launched. The hospital was founded by the community, for the community. Once completed, it will provide free services to those in the southern half of New Zealand who are unable to access care through the public or private health systems. Hospice Southland provides specialist palliative care to those with a life-limiting illness in Southland and the Wakatipu Basin, free charge, and ideally in their setting of choice. There team of health professionals specialises in providing quality treatment and care to patients and their families. The team maintains close links with other health professionals and caregivers involved. Hospice Southland have a range of services and program's which include, Community Palliative Care, Day Programme, Living Legacies, In-Patient Unit, Spiritual Support and Patient and Family Support. Registrations will be caped at x150 scooters this year and you are expected to raise a minimum of $100 per person or you will be removed from the challenge as we have other riders on a waiting list that are keen to raise funds for our charity. You can register yourself or your team from 1st June 2021. So lets do our bit, grab a scooter, lodge your entry, get fundraising and do your bit to help fight New Zealand’s deadliest disease. |
