Your Ride
Scooters must be registered and ideally 50CC or under.
Departure
The Scooter riders will depart Stirling Point Carpark, Bluff at 8:30am(Start). Please arrive no later than 7:30am to check-in down on foreshore road Bluff, and the support vehicles will move on to the first scheduled stop(Winton) after the 8.15am briefing.
Organised Support Vehicles
For rider safety, we have arranged a sign-written pilot vehicle to travel ahead of the scooters at all times to warn oncoming traffic. We will also provide a tail-end-charlie to collect you if you breakdown.
These vehicles will also be equipped with extra petrol, emergency cell phones and a first-aid kit if needed.
Breakdowns
If a break down occurs, our support vehicles will help load your bike/bikes and take you to the next scheduled stop – where you can fix (if time) or transfer bike to your own support trailer.
Your Support Crew
Should you breakdown you will need to make your own arrangements to get your bike from a scheduled stop to the finish in Queenstown. Similarly, if the weather becomes unridable at any point you must have a support vehicle pre-organised to provide cover and if needed transport you and your bike onto the the next stop.
We encourage you to buddy-up with another couple of riders to keep the number of support vehicles on the road down - we'd safely say you can get 4 bikes per trailer.
Safety for support crews if traveling with the event
For safety of our riders, we insist that all support vehicles travel in front of the pilot vehicle at the legal speed limit to avoid a back-log of traffic.
The leading vehicle will give a double blast of an air horn 5-minutes before departing each scheduled stop - this will be the support vehicles cue to hit the road.
Rider Road Rules
Rider Gear
Due to the nature of the Southern South Island it should be expected that we will get four seasons in one day - including rain and possibly sleet/snow. We therefore insist that riders bring a full change of clothes and plenty of warm and 100% wind and waterproof gear. You should bring and/or be wearing: Wet weather jacket (preferably high viz for safety - or consider getting a high viz over-vest), thermals (top and bottom), warm jersey, gloves, thick socks, boots, scarf and a balaclava. Plus a suitable helmet. There is no prize for getting hypothermia!
Food and Drink
The stops along the way have generously supported us by offering discounted hot drinks and food for the riders and support crews. Please bring a stash of gold coins and cash payable to the stops to cover their costs.
Petrol
You will need to have a full tank at the start line. From there, you will be required to carry a small tank of gas in your support vehicle you can then refuel as needed at the scheduled stops. Our recommendation is to carry 5-litres per scooter. We will have emergency carry-tank supplies on-hand if needed.
Returning to Invercargill
The organisers have made no arrangements to get you and your scooter back home. A small group of die hard scooter riders will be riding their bikes home on Sunday morning. If you choose to do so, this is entirely at your own risk and not deemed part of the event. Please remember to check your fuel tank has the range to reach the fuel stops along the way.
Event Cancellation
We will ride in pretty much any weather condition providing the road remains open (so be prepared!), however if the event organisers feel that the weather is extreme and may put riders at risk the ride may be cancelled prior to leaving Bluff. Should this happen, the organisers will email all registered riders with the event cancellation. We will endeavour to give as much notice as possible. If the weather becomes nasty while on the road, the event will be put on-hold until the weather clears. This is where your support vehicles come into play. If necessary you will need to load the bikes to your support trailer and travel by car to the next stop (or shelter until the weather improves).
Donations
If you receive a donation on the day you can put this in the buckets or give it to the Scooter Challenge Team in one of the Pilot Vehicle.
First Aid
We will have a number of medics travelling with us - both on scooters and in the support vehicles. A full medical kit will be available in the Pilot Vehicle and with the organised support vehicles. We will also have a Satellite phone in case of an emergency outside of mobile phone reception. If an accident happens all riders (other than those able to assist) are to continue on to the next stop and await further instruction from the organisers

- Riders must stay near the left side of our lane and remain in single file in 100 km/hr zones.
- We aim to travel as a group so please stay between the lead pilot vehicle and the tail-end-charlie.
- Please remain courteous to other road users and keep our in-group overtaking to a minimum or when it is safe to do so.
- When entering an official stop point, we will need to bunch up. Keep an eye out for the Pilot vehicle and park as instructed.
